Control an Android mobile device

Introduction

The ScreenConnect for Android app allows hosts to view and control recent Android devices.

Preparing an Android device for a ScreenConnect session

1. Check that the device meets device requirements

Before attempting to connect and control an Android device, review the mobile app requirements to ensure the device can be controlled.

2. Install the ConnectWise ScreenConnect app from the Google Play store

Download and install the ScreenConnect app onto the Android device.

3. Launch the app

Launch the app by tapping the ScreenConnect icon.

4. Enter a ScreenConnect URL 

Enter the ScreenConnect URL that's provided by your technician. Next, tap Go.

Note: After you enter a URL once, it will be saved on the main screen for quick access.

5. Join your session

Your technician will instruct you how to join your session. For example, they might ask you to enter a code in the Join with a code box and tap the arrow icon.

6. Grant permissions to the ScreenConnect app

From here, you might see prompts asking for various permissions to share your screen. Review the prompts and continue.

Note: The prompts might be worded slightly differently across different Android devices and OS versions.

Once a technician has connected to your device, you'll be prompted to allow additional access to certain Android features through the Accessibility settings. Tap Go to Accessibility to open your device's Accessibility settings.

In your device's Accessibility settings, enable access for ScreenConnect. 

Note: The Accessibility settings layout might be different depending on your Android version and device.

Once you have enabled the Accessibility setting, a new message requests access to view your device's screen and interact with your device. Review the information, and grant access to your device by tapping Allow

Next, return to the ScreenConnect app. Review the screen casting warning, and click Start now or OK to continue.

If you approved all of the permissions, your technician should now be connected to your device. Your screen should read, "Live Capture Mode."

You can disconnect from a connection by tapping the back arrow in the top-left corner of the app.

Controlling an Android device during a session

The following is a list of known keyboard mapping to certain functions on an Android device. 

Note: Depending on the device, the following actions (and others) may or may not be available for your device.

Mouse event Android device event
Single click Single tap
Double-click Double-tap
Long press Long press (opens pop-out menus)
Click + Swipe Vertical or horizontal scroll
Wheel scroll Vertical scroll
Shift + Wheel scroll Horizontal scroll

 

There are also additional functions mapped to the technician's keyboard:

Windows key Home
Ctrl + Tab App Switch
Enter Enter

 

 

Send a file to an Android device

The app also allows for transferring files from a machine to the Android device using either the file transfer menu or the shared toolbox.

Note: At this time, you can only send a single file to an Android device. It's not possible to send a folder, receive a file, or receive a folder.

When transferring a file, you might be asked to grant the ScreenConnect app permission to access the files on your device. Review the prompt and click Allow to continue.

To send a file from the file transfer menu:

  1. Click File Transfer > Send File
  2. Select a file to send to the device

The file appears on the Android device in the Internal Storage Download Files directory.

Toolbox menu

  1. Click the Toolbox menu item
  2. Select a toolbox item to send to the device

The file appears on the Android device in the Internal Storage Download > Temp directory.

Ending a session

From the Android device

Exit the session by re-opening the ScreenConnect app on their device and then tapping the "back arrow" button in the left corner of the app.

You can also completely close the app from running the background by tapping the Recents (III) button on the device. Next, swipe up to close the app. 

Note: On some devices, you may need to swipe left or right to close the app.  

The ScreenConnect logo in the top bar will disappear to let you know you've disconnected.

From the ScreenConnect Host page

Close the host client and select Delete the Session. You can also delete the session on the Host page by right-clicking and selecting Delete, or by clicking the Delete icon.
