Upgrade an on-premises installation

Introduction

This article will explain how to upgrade your ConnectWise ScreenConnect™ on-premises installation.

Tip: If you have a cloud instance, view our cloud instance upgrade instructions.

Check your eligibility

Before upgrading, check to see if your license is eligible for an upgrade.

1. Go to your Overview page

2. Expand the Version Check box

The Version Check will list the following information:

  • Your Version – The version of ScreenConnect that is currently installed
  • Latest Version – The latest version of that has been released
  • Latest Eligible Version – The latest version that is permitted by your plan or license
  • Download Location – Where to download the upgrade

3. Compare the Latest Eligible Version with the Latest Version

If you have the latest version that your plan or license permits, you will see the text On Latest Eligible.

To upgrade your license, visit the Administration > License page.

Tip: If you are not eligible for an upgrade, visit our upgrade page to generate a quote for another year of upgrades and support.

Upgrade your on-premises installation

To upgrade to the latest version, you do not need to uninstall your previous installation. Simply follow these steps:

1. Create a backup of your existing installation

View our instructions on creating a backup of your installation.

2. (Mac or Linux servers) Extract the contents of the installer package

If you're upgrading on a Mac or Linux machine, be sure to extract all the contents from the .zip file (Mac) or tarball (Linux) to your server. The extracted contents do not need to be in the same directory as your installation.

3. Run the installer package or script

Run the installer (.msi) or installation script (install.sh) on your server. You do not need to uninstall your existing installation, as the appropriate changes will be made during the upgrade.

Note: In versions before 23.9.10, if your license has expired or is otherwise invalid with the current version of the software, the installation will stop. You must have a valid license to continue installation. You can upgrade your license from the License page.

4. Upgrade your access agents

After you've upgraded your server installation, your access agents will each display their outdated version number on the Host page. Be sure to upgrade your access clients from the Host page to ensure that the agents will receive bug fixes and improvements from the new version.

Upgrade pathway

If you are running a much older version, you may need to upgrade incrementally due to changes in the architecture of the product. The upgrade path is as follows:

2.1 → 2.5 → 3.1 → 4.4 → 5.4 →19.2→22.8→23.3→ Latest stable release

Important:

  • Make sure to upgrade your access agents after every incremental upgrade!
  • Version 19.2 requires .NET version 4.7.2+
